The South Island has some of the world’s highest wasp densities, and once a nest gets established, the problem only gets worse as the colony grows. Summer is when wasps become a genuine headache. As colonies reach peak size in late summer, sometimes housing thousands of individuals, they become more defensive and more likely to sting. That’s when most people discover they’ve got a problem, often by disturbing a nest they didn’t know was there.
The Problem With DIY Wasp Treatment
Grabbing a can of fly spray from the supermarket and having a crack at the nest yourself is tempting, but it’s also how people end up in genuine trouble. A disturbed wasp colony doesn’t retreat, they attack. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times, and if you’re dealing with a mature nest, you might have hundreds or thousands of very angry insects coming at you all at once.
Even worse, partial treatments can scatter the colony and make them more aggressive without actually solving the problem. German (Vespulagermanica) and common (Vespulavulgaris) wasps, the two main species causing problems here, are particularly defensive of their nests, especially later in the season.

How We Deal With Wasp Nests
The approach depends entirely on what we’re dealing with. Can we see the nest? Is it underground or up within the roof? What species are we looking at? These all change how we tackle the job.
Finding The Nest
Sometimes you’ll know exactly where the nest is, you can see wasps streaming in and out of a specific spot. Other times you just know you’ve got wasps around, but the actual nest is hidden. We track their flight patterns and locate entry points to work out where they’re nesting.
Direct Nest Treatment
When we can locate and access the nest entrance, we apply permethrin insecticide dust. This gets carried into the nest by the wasps themselves as they come and go. The entire colony typically dies within 24 hours as the treatment reaches right into the heart of the nest.
Strategic Baiting
Later in summer, when wasps are actively hunting for protein, we use wasp lure baits. These work brilliantly when you’ve got multiple nests or when the exact location is impossible to pinpoint. Foraging wasps take the bait back to feed the larvae, wiping out the colony from within.

Once we’ve dealt with the immediate problem, we’ll talk through what might have drawn wasps to your property and how to reduce the chances of it happening again. Often it’s simple stuff like outdoor rubbish management or exposed timber that needs sealing.
Identifying Your Wasp Problem
Wasps become a huge problem during the summer months, particularly from December through to March when colonies are at their peak. If you’re seeing wasps regularly flying in and out of the same spot on your property, that’s a clear sign of an active nest that needs dealing with.
Common nesting spots include underground burrows (about 80% of nests), roof spaces, wall cavities, under eaves, and in compost bins or woodpiles. German and common wasps are the main culprits in the South Island. Both are black and yellow striped, and both are aggressive when their nest is threatened. A mature nest can house several thousand wasps by late summer.
The longer you leave a wasp nest, the bigger it gets and the more dangerous it becomes. They also become more aggressive as the season progresses and food becomes scarcer. If we can locate the nest, we treat it by applying a permethrin insecticide dust at the entrance. The wasps carry the treatment into the nest on their bodies, eliminating the entire colony including the queen within 24 hours. During late summer, we also use wasp lure baits which work when nests can’t be easily located.

When we can treat nests directly with insecticide dust, the colony usually dies within 24 hours. Baiting treatments work more gradually as the product needs to be carried back and distributed throughout the nest, typically taking several days to achieve complete elimination. The timing also depends on the size of the colony and how actively the wasps are foraging.
There’s no need to remove a treated nest. Once the colony is dead, the nest is just empty paper and poses no risk. New wasps won’t reuse an old nest. If you’d prefer it removed for aesthetic reasons, wait at least 48 hours after treatment to ensure no live wasps remain.
We don’t recommend it. A disturbed colony will attack aggressively, and a single nest can contain thousands of wasps. Without proper protective equipment and the right treatment products, you’re risking multiple stings. Some people have severe allergic reactions to wasp venom.
